Energy analysis of RI, NC, and Colorado

Go to the United States Energy Information Administration website located at:

http://www.eia.gov/state/

Compare Rhode Island, North Carolina, and Colorado based on the following:

Click on the “Overview” and “Analysis” tabs to answer the following questions:

1) Which state has the lowest per capita consumption in the United States?

2) What types of fossil fuels the majority of consumption of energy in each state?

3) Which states have coal fired power plants versus natural gas plants and which state considers clean energy as an economic driving force?

4) In your opinion which state is on the best path towards the sustainable use of nonrenewable resources for energy consumption, and why?

Explanation / Answer

1) The state of New York has the lowest per capita power consumption in entire United States with the consumption of 190 million Btu. in 2014.

2)

Colorado : In preferential order: Coal, Natural Gas, Petroleum

North Carolina: Majorly Coal with little consumption of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

Rhode Island: Major consumption is imported Natural gas.

3) Colorado: Coal fired production is three-fifth of energy production. Natural gas is used for one-fifth of energy produced. Renewable clean energy is key industry and energy production has tripled since start.

North Carolina: Major source of energy is produced from nuclear energy. Coal and natural gas combined account to three-fifths of the energy produced. North Carolina was the first state in the south west to adopt a renewable energy portfolio standard.

Rhode Island: About 95% of the power generated comes from Natural gas imported from independant power generators. Very little power is manufactured from windmills, etc.

4)

In my opinion, North Carolina is in the best path towards the sustainable use of non renewable resources for energy consumption. Main reason being their lack of fossil fuel resources in their state and importing fossil fuel would be very taxing for them. Hence, they have started producing energy using nuclear reactors and clean energy is a key developing industry in North Carolina. The cons for Rhode island is that it is heavily reliant on independant power producers and switching to clean energy would be out of their hands at this point. Colorado has too much of fossil fuel resources that even though they invest in clean energy, it would be unprofitable for them to not use the overlying coal in their state. Hence, North Carolina is the best out of the three may it be out of choice or circumstance.

All the best :)
