Pre-Lab Questions
Describe how the functional units for beta carotene, xanthophyll, chlorophyll A, and chlorophyll B are different. Be sure to identify the subunits that adhere to paper during chromatography.
Describe a technique for measuring photosynthetic rate.
Many deciduous trees have leaves that turn yellow in the fall. What do you suppose is happening in the leaves at the cellular and molecular level?
Chloroplasts and mitochondria are both unusual in that they have double membranes and contain their own set of DNA. Can you think of any explanations for this observation?
Explanation / Answer
Ans:
Beta carotene: Beta carotene is the yellow colors which transport light to chlorophyll.
Xanthophylls: Xanthophylls are the yellow shades that are in the gathering of carotenoid. Its appears to be more in the xanthophyll. It is the green color in plant leaves which retain light. All plants have chlorophyll which helps the plant to deliver sustenance for the entire plant.
Chlorophyll A: Chlorophyll A utilizes oxygen.
Chlorophyll B: Chlorophyll B is yellow in shading. It is more soluble than chlorophyll A in light of the fact that it utilizes carbonyl shades as opposed to chlorophyll A which utilizes oxygen atoms.
# There are a few key methods to measuring the rate of photosynthesis:
1) Measuring the uptake of CO2
2) Measuring the production of O2
3) Measuring the production of carbohydrates
4) Measuring the increase in dry mass
As the equation for respiration is almost the reverse of the one for photosynthesis, since carbon dioxide is used up during the process, and oxygen produced, the rate of photosynthesis can be measured directly, by measuring either the production of oxygen or the uptake of carbon dioxide. For instance, aquatic plants (plants in water) release oxygen bubbles during photosynthesis which can be measured. The easiest way to measure photosynthesis rate in this manner is to measure carbon dioxide or oxygen levels using a data logger.
