Hydrogeology/ Geological Enginnering Question
Values from the previous year are shown below for water transfers in a watershed. All values are normalized as an equivalent depth over the entire watershed. The surface area of the streams is less than 1% of the total.
Precipitation: 131 cm
Stream flow: 48 cm
Evapotranspiration: 63 cm
Runoff: 20 cm
a. How much water in the stream came from the baseflow?
??
B. How much water infiltrated to reach the aquifer?
Infiltration= precipitation - (ET+runoff)
Infiltration = 131 - (63+20)= 48 cm
I believe the answer to B is correct, however I am not sure how to approach A)- the baseflow question.
Explanation / Answer
answer- infiltration is movment or seepage of water in subsurface or soil. it is measured in cm/hour or mm/hour. it formula is Infiltration (F)= Precipitation (P) - Evaporation ( E)- Transpiration (T) - Evapotranspiration ( ET) - Runoff (R)- Storage (S)
given precipitation P= 131cm, Evapotranpiration (ET)= 48cm, Run Off R= 20cm
So infiltration F will be = 131-63-20= 48 cm
you are correct in the calculation infiltration water to reach aquifer
in the other case
Baseline flow is amount of grounwater contribute to stream.
baseflow= deep sub surface flow- shallow sursurface flow
it includes water to stream derived from seepage of groundwater flow
i think the water present in the aquifer will contribute to the stream so 48cm water will be contribute stream by the groundfow because this will not include stream flow.
