Question

Hydrogeology

3. You are given a data set that shows diurnal changes in the water table over a five-day period. Your client wants to know the amount of groundwater that is removed from the system as a result of Evapotranspiration. Please assume that specific yield is equal to 0.25. Note: the ET rate in days 1,2, and 3 are the same so you only need to calculate ET for one of those days. During day 4 something strange happens which makes it impossible to use the White method to calculate ET Water Level Site 1 12 10 6 0 0 4 6 Time (days) Your client was not clear the exact time of day the x-axes represent. Based on these data what time of day do the labels 1,2,3, etc represent? a. b. Calculate ETG c. Describe in one or two sentences what is happening on day 4 and 5?

Explanation / Answer

Answer) Evapotranspiration is the amount of water that is removed from the surface of the leaf on hot summer day.

Specific yield= 2.5.

ET on day 1=2.5×volune of water on day 1=2.5×9cm=22.5cm

Day 2=2.5×7cm=17.5cm

Day3=2.5×5cm=12.5cm

Day 4 has a different phenomenon, where the level of water has increased exponentially.thus no ET has occurred.

b)Total amount of water lost by ET=22.5+12.5+17.5=55.5cm =ETg

a)The time represented in day 1 is from 2pm to 4pm. When the rate of ET is maximum

The time in day 2 is noon, ET is moderate

The time in day 3 is probably evening, when the rate of Et is minimum.

The ET of day 4 and 5 is calculated by white method on the basis of riparian zone water.

This is calculated ET from net Evapotranspiration and net groundwater upwelling from high resolution observation.

c)Day 4 and 5 has high amount of water volume.Thius rate of ET is is increasing at day 4 and going down in day 5
