Question

Please help me figure this out.

An old 'trick' for cooling down a hot beverage quickly is to immerse a cold spoon into it. A silver spoon weighing 117 g is placed into an espresso coffee cup containing 1.50 oz. of espresso at 80.0 degree C, which is fairly hot to drink. What temperature, in degree C, would the spoon need to be to cool the espresso by 20.0 degree C if the heat capacity of the espresso cup is 49.0 J/degree C? Assume espresso has identical properties as pure water and that no heat is lost to the surroundings. Silver has a specific heat of 0.235 J/g degree C and 1.00 oz. = 29.6 mL.

Explanation / Answer

s(silver) = 0.235 J/gC

117*0.235*(T - 60) + 49(20) = 1.5*29.6*(20)

T = 63.34
