Question
A) hexaneB) EtOAc/Hexane 1:20
C) EtOAc/Hexane 1:10
D) both hexane and EtOAc/Hexane 1:20
E) both EtOAc/Hexane 1:10 and EtOAc/Hexane 1:20 A mixture of two compounds was spotted on three TLC plates (A-C). The plates were developed using three different eluent systems: Hexane, EtOAc/Hexane 1:20, and EtOAc/Hexane 1:10 (the listed order of eluents does not correspond to the order of TLC plates shown). Which eluent system is the most suitable to perform preparative separation of the two compounds? hexane EtOAc/Hexane 1:20 EtOAc/Hexane 1:10 both hexane and EtOAc/Hexane 1:20 both EtOAc/Hexane 1:10 and EtOAc/Hexane 1:20
Explanation / Answer
We just did this in Orgo lab. The question is a little confusing, but here is the idea. The idea is that there is a disparity in polar affinity bewteen the two compounds. If we were to use a separatory funnel filled with a polar compound, one compound would travel faster through the funnel than the other one, hence separating them.
Answer D) T
hey both distinguish between the two compounds' polar affinities. However, B would separate them more quickly.
