Question
I have an assignment that asks me to calculate the yields and give the balanced equations of the reactions used in a experiment that requires the following, now I want to know which of these reagents will be in the reaction and how the total reaction would look like, if the experiment requires the following:
It is unnecessary to protect the reaction mixture from exposure to air. Dissolve 20g (0.21
mole) (NH4)2CO3 in 50cm3 water and add 60cm3 concentrated NH3 solution. A solution of
15g (0.052 mole) [Co(H2O)6](NO3)2 in 30cm3 water is added to this. Now slowly add 8cm3
30% H2O2 to the solution (CAUTION: use gloves). Pour the mixture into a porcelain dish
and evaporate in the fumehood until the volume is just a little less than 100cm3. Do not boil
the solution. (Use a hotplate) While the evaporation is taking place, add another 5g (0.05
mole) (NH4)2CO3 in small portions. Filter the hot solution in a Buchner flask and cool the
filtrate in an ice bath. Filter off the red crystals and wash with a very small volume of ice
cold water and subsequently with a similar volume of ethanol.
Question:
Use balanced chemical reaction equations to explain, as far as possible, the course of each
reaction and colour change that occur. Discuss possible reaction mechanisms. What is
meant by anation? Explain by referring to your results during reaction of the carbonato
complex with acids.
