Question

I have a pre-lab and it is asking me to calculate for 2 alcohols 2-propanol and 1-pentanol and assume that I start with 150 mmol for each. I also need to give the theotetical yield by weight and by volume. It also says that the physical data on the sters can be found in the CRC handbook.

I am completely lost. I am assuming that I need to know the products of the esterification of 1-pentanol with acetic acid and also the products of esterification of 2-propanol with acetic acid. Wouln't I also need to know the products of these esterifications in order to calculate the theoretical yeild?

Also my lab is on estrification and the pre-lab doesnt say any thing else other than what I had already given.

Please help!

Explanation / Answer

alchohols reacts with acid to give ester

but to know theoretical yield we need to know amount of both reactansts

but we have alchohols moles but not acid

however assuming if excess acid is present then

1 CH3CH2CH2CH2CH2OH + CH3COOH --------> CH3COOCH2-CH2-CH2-CH2-CH3

since 1 mole pentanol gives 1 mole ester in excess acetic acid

ester product = 150 mmols = 0.15 moles

theoretical yield = moles x molar mass = 0.15 x 130 = 19.5 gm

its vol = mass/density = 19.5/d ( d should be available in data)

similalry samethig can be applied for propanol2
