1.- A vessel contains a mixture of the following gases: nitrogen dioxide (NO2), Carbon dioxide (CO2), and propane (C3H8).  If there is a leak in the vessel, list the order in which these gases will reach a detector at the far end of the room that the vessel is in.  (PLEASE SHOW ALL WORK)


2.-     A student needs to prepare 250 mL of a 0.235M solution of potassium chloride      (KCl).

a)     How many moles of solid KCl are needed to prepare the solution? (PLEASE SHOW ALL WORK)

      b) How many grams of solid KCl are needed to prepare the solution? (PLEASE SHOW ALL WORK )

Explanation / Answer

1) rate of diffusion is inversly proportional to molar mass , hence light gases go first order is CO2 ,C3H8>NO2 (CO2,C3H8 are nearly equal)

2) a)moles of KCl = 0.25x0.235 = 0.05875

b)mass of KCl = 0.05875 x 74.55 = 4.38 gm is needed
