Question
1) If you mix equal concentrations of reactants and products, in which direction would the following reaction proceed. Right or left?
H2SO4(aq) + NH3(aq) <--> NH4^+ (aq) + HSO4^- (aq)
(I'm guessing the arrow is double sided...don't know if that'll effect the answer?)
2) What is the pH of a 1.00 M HF solution? The Ka for HF is 7.2 x 10^-4. Please show your work for how you got this.
3) Calculate the pH of a buffer solution that contains 0.25 M benzoic acid (C6H5COOH) and 0.15 M sodium benzoate (C6H5COONa). Ka= 6.5 x 10^-5 for benzoic acid. Please show your work for how you got this.
Explanation / Answer
1. If we add equal amts of reactants and products in equillibrium, the reaction quotient will increase... So, the reaction will proceed backwards..
2. HF ----> H+ + F-
initial 1 0 0
final 1- x x x
Ka = x^2 = 7.2 x 10^-4
so, x = 2.68 * 10^-2 = [H+]
pH = -log[H+]
