Q.  How does the state in which a person lives in the U.S. affect the quality and cost of health care they have access to? What are the reasons for this? Provide at least two examples of this disparity and the reasons that drive them.

Explanation / Answer

1) The incidence of firearm inuries is on the rise. Large proportion and all sections of the population are under the riskof firearm injuries which can easily be prevented. So, firearm injuries is an important public health issue. At the non-governmental level, schools, community organizations and media can play an important role in reducing firearm violence. Education is needed regarding gun storage practices and about possible access to firearms. In terms of governmental policy, a crucial first step would seem to be to create a new agency or provide an existing agency with the power to regulate firearms. Laws can be enacted regarding the legit use of firearms and punishments to be enforced strictly in case of violation. Registration of firearms can be done so that it can be tracked.

2) Minnesota is the best performing state in healthcare delivery. Missisipi, Oklahoma and Arakansas are at the bottom of the ranking. In Missisipi, medicaid eligibility for non-disabled adults is limited to parents with incomes below 29 percent of poverty, or about $6,800 a year for a family of four, and adults without dependent children remain ineligible regardless of their income. Mississippi is at a disadvantage demographically. The state has one of the highest poverty rates in the country and just one abortion clinic.
