Question
Reaction
1.) To a 100mL round bottom flask (R.B.F) add 2.85g of KOH
2.) Add 30mL of 1-pentanol, mix well
3.) Add .75g of P.E.T, cut onto small pieces
4.) Heat the mixture at reflux for 30 minutes
After a short time a thick white suspension results, if this becomes hard to stir, more pentanol may be added.
Workup
1.) After the reaction mixture has cooled to room temperature, add 15mL of water and stir.
2.) Transfer the mixture to a separatory funnel (do not get solids in the separatory funnel; if any of the solid remains after the addition of water you should filter the mixture before adding to the separatory funnel).
3.) Drain the bottom aqueous layer from the separatory funnel into a 125mL Erlenmeyer flask.
4.) Extract the alcohol layer with an additional 15mL of water, and combine the aqueous extracts.
5.) SLOWLY and with stirring acidify the combined aqueous extracts with 10%HCL (slow addition!!)
6.) Collect the solid product by vacuum filtration. Let Dry until next lab period.
7.) Record an IR (KBr pellet) of your product (DO NOT TAKE MELTING POINT).
