Question

Re-do Example 4.4 with T= 25 degrees C, Patm = 75 kPa, and set P/gamma = 2/3 (P/gamma) that would cause cavitation due just to vaporization of water. Re-state all given information, and follow standard HW solution guidelines – provide brief explanation of steps.

Example 4.4 A PVC pipeline, 40 cm in diameter and 2,000 m long, carries water at 10°C between two reservoirs as shown in Figure 4.2. The two reservoirs have a water surface elevation difference of 30 m. At midlength, the pipeline must be raised to carry the water over a small hill. Determine the maximum height the pipeline may be raised (at the summit, S) above the lower reservoir's water surface elevation in order to prevent cavitation.

Explanation / Answer

maximum height pipeline must be raised = 30 * 2/3 * [(75 * 1000)/(3.14 * 0.2 * 0.2 * 2000)]

                                                                = 5971.33 m
