Question

We are supposed to prepare a probable scheme to separate a mixture of 3 components: the first will be an acid (or base) organic compound, the second will be a neutral organic compound, and the third will be 1,4-dibromobenzene. I know how to separate the acid (or base) component. However, the remaining 2 neutral compounds in the dichloromethane solution I'm not sure how to deal with. For most of them, I know I can use fractional distillation, as their melting/boiling points are very different, but there is one possibility of the 1,4-dibromobenzene with benzil and the melting points are so close to each other that the fractional distillation may not be possible. Is there another way to separate and purify these? Please no copy/paste responses - they will not get the ratings. I need to know exactly how (and why). Thanks!!

Explanation / Answer

When we separate 2 mixture of organic compounds through fractional distillation or Rota vap., we use to deal with the boiling point of the compound and no with the melting point. As the boiling point of 1,4-dibromobenzene is 220 deg centigrade and thet of benzil is 346 to 348 deg centigrade., they can be separated through Rotavap technique. We dont have to consider ther melting poin tto campare.

Now if incase we have two compounds with nearly same boiling point(i.e., forming azeotropic mixtute) can be separated by gas chromatography. Because GC uses two methods of separation. The first is the separation by boiling point and secondly there is a column that the gas goes through before it reaches the detector. Different substances have different amount of attraction to the inside of this column. If a substance has a high amount of attraction to the column, it will take longer to reach the end of the column where the detector is. This dual separation allows separations beyond boiling point differences.
