Question
A student found that the mass of an empty specific gravity bottle was 21.431 g. Metal pieces were added to the dry bottle. The specific gravity bottle and the metal pieces together had a mass of 34.899 g. when deionized water was added to the specific gravity bottle containing the metal pieces, the total mass was 43.029 g. The metal pieces were emptied out and the specific gravity bottle filled with deionized water at 20 degrees celcius. The mass of the specific gravity bottle filled with water was 31.408 g. 1. what is the mass of the metal pieces in the specific gravity bottle? 2. what is the mass of the water in the specific gravity bottle when the metal pieces were there? 3.what is the mass of the water in the specific gravity bottle after the metal had been emptied out? 4.what was the mass of the water that was displaced by the metal pieces? 5.What is the volume of the displaced water? 6.What is the volume of the metal pieces? 7.What is the density of the metal pieces? Show all work pleaseExplanation / Answer
1) It will be obtained by subtracting mass of (bottle + metal) - mass of bottle :
34.899 - 21.431 = 13.468 g
2) Mass of water with metal = Mass of (water + metal + bottle) - mass of (bottle + metal)
= 43.029 - 34.899 = 8.13 g
3) Mass of water without metal = Mass of (water + bottle) - mass of bottle
= 31.408 - 21.431 = 9.977 g
4) Subtract the two masses of water obtained...
9.977 - 8.13 = 1.847 g
5) volume = mass / density = 1.847 / 0.9982 = 1.85 ml
6) Volume of water displaced is same as the volume of metal...
So, volume of metal = 1.85 ml
7) mass / volume of metal = 13.468 / 1.85 = 7.28 g / ml
