Question
PRE-LAB PREPARATION SHEET FOR LAB 7-KIRCHHOFF's CIRCUIT RULES (Due at the beginning of lab) Directions: Read over Lab 7 and then answer the following questions about the procedures. 1. What is a multimeter? What quantities can you measure with one? In order to measure the potential difference across a resistor, should a multi- meter be connected in series or in parallel with the resistor? 2. 3. A resistor has four colored stripes in the following order: orange, violet, red, and silver. What is its rated resistance and the tolerance? 4. How will you measure resistances to determine a rule for calculating the effective resistance of one or more resistors wired in parallel. 5. State Kirchhoff's Loop Rule. 6. State Kirchhoff's Junction Rule. 7. Which of Kirchhoff's rules is based on charge conservation? LAB 7: KIRCHHOFF'S CIRCUIT RULESExplanation / Answer
Solution:
1) Multimeter is the device used to measure the current , voltage and resistance.
2) In order to measure the potential difference the multimeter should be connected in parallel with resistor.
3) resistance would be 3700 ohm ane tolerance +/- 10%
4) equivalent resistance in parallel can be calculated as
=> 1 / R = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + 1/R3...................
5) Kirchoff's loop rule states that the sum of voltage in a closed circuit would be zero.
i.e Sigma(V) = 0
6) Kirchoff's jucntion law states that at any node the sum of current flowing into is equal to the sum of current that is flowing out.
7) Kirchhoff's junction rule is based on conservation of charge.
