Question
PRE-LAB PREPARATION SHEET FOR LAB 6: GRAVITATIONAL FORCES (Due at the beginning of Lab 6) Directions: Read over Lab 6 and then answer the following questions about the procedures 1. In Activity 1-1, why is the motion detector set up so that distance away from it is negative? 2. In Activity 1-1, why do you need to be careful about how you drop the ball? any i 3. How do you expect your velocity-time and acceleration-time graphs for Ac- tivities 1-1 and 1-4 will compare? Do you expect that they will be different or the same? t op the mass ng boay 4. What is your Prediction 2-1? Will one ball have a larger acc or will will have they both have the same acceleration? the sowa 5. What will you use to explore normal forces in Investigation 3? LAB 6·GRAVITATIONAL FORCES 125
Explanation / Answer
1) Since the ball is in free fall to get the correct/ relevant velocity v time and acceleration v time graphs the direction away from the motion detector was set up as negative.
2) To make sure that the motion detector only catches the motion of the ball and not the motion of the experimenter’s hand.
5) The weight of the object since weight = normal force.
