Question
Use the right-hand-rule, determine the direction of the magnetic force on a current carrying strip in the following diagram, where the magnetic field is parallel to the surface of this paper: The magnetic force on the current strip is directed: a. to the left b. to the right upward d. c. downward "into the paper" e. f. "out of the paper" Use the right-hand-rule, determine the direction of the magnetic force on a current carrying strip in the following diagram, where the magnetic field is perpendicular to the surface of this paper: The magnetic force on the current strip is directed: a. to the left b. to the right c. upward d. downward e. "into the paper" f. "out of the paper"Explanation / Answer
Right hand rule says that if you point your thumb towards direction of current, fingers towards magnetic field then perpendicular to palm gives direction of force.
For first case.. a component of B which is perpendicular to current will produce force in a direction which is outside the paper.
In case 2 direction of force will be downwards.
