Question
The cord from an appliance is too short to reach the wall outlet in your room. You have two extension cords to choose from.
(a) Find the voltage drop in the first extension cord having a 0.0580 resistance and through which 4.00 A is flowing.
V
(b) The second extension cord is cheaper and utilizes thinner wire. It has a resistance of 0.116 and the current flowing through it is 4.00 A. By what amount does the voltage supplied to the appliance change when the first extension cord is replaced by the second?
V
Explanation / Answer
a)
We know that by ohms law,
V=IR
So putting in the values here,
V=0.058*4
=0.232V
b)
Similarly applying V=IR here as well,
V=0.116*4
V=0.464V
The voltage just double s when the cord is changed
It changes by 0.232V
