Question

Draw a balanced redox equation for theoxidation of CuI. Thanks in advance for your help! EDIT: Upon reading the instructions more carefully (actuallybackground information for which this is a follow-up question),this redox reaction is supposed to be that between CuI andatmospheric oxygen to form copper (II). I'm still not sure how thebalanced reaction would go, however; would the product be CuO?Would elemental iodide be displaced as a result?    Draw a balanced redox equation for theoxidation of CuI. Explanation / Answer

CuI is reacted with Atmospheric Oxygen it Forms 2Moles of CuO And Iodine Gas is Liberated . The Chemical Reaction Is 2 CuI + O2 ----->   2CuO + I2(g) Here two Half reactions Are Involved . Initially Cu Exist as +1 Oxidation state inreactant side . where as in product side it exist as +2 OxidationState . The Oxidation Reaction Is 2 Cu+ ----->    2Cu +2 + 2e-    The redubtion Reaction Is   O2 +2e- -----> 2O2-    The Overall Reaction Is    2 CuI + O2 ----->   2CuO + I2(g)       The redubtion Reaction Is   O2 +2e- -----> 2O2-    The Overall Reaction Is    2 CuI + O2 ----->   2CuO + I2(g)
