Question
The respective standard reduction potential in volts for Ni2+ and Ag+ are -0.28 and +0.80. The oxidizing agent in a cell based on nickel and silver is a) Ni b) Ni2+ c) Ag+ d) Ag e) the salt bridge Can you please, also, explain how you solved because I have no idea. I rate all 5 stars!Explanation / Answer
4. Looking at the two reduction potentials, Ag has the greater one (+0.80) so the Ag reaction will be reduction: Ag+ + e- ==> Ag; Eo = +0.80 V. The Ni reaction will be oxidation: Ni ==> Ni2+ + 2e-; written like that, its potential is +0.25V. Ecell = Ec + E a = +0.80 + 0.25 = +1.05 V. The reaction will proceed in the direction of Ag+ + Ni ==> Ag + Ni2+.
