15 M aqueous NH3 added to a precipitate which was Hg2Cl2, AgCl does several things: -------------------- 1st to AgCl ppt: it turns the white ppt of AgCl into a soluble complex ion, that you can pour off in solution to another test tube AgCl(s) & 2 NH3(aq) --> [Ag (NH3)2]+1 (aq) & Cl-(aq) ------------------- 2nd it allows a self oxidation-reduction of (Hg2)+2 in which one of the Hg+1 is oxidized up to Hg+2,... & it foms a white ppt of Mercury(II)amide chloride, while the other Hg+1 is reduced down to Hg the element (which appears black) the mix often looks grey, & you are right on the equation: Hg2Cl2 (s) + 2NH3 (aq) -> Hg (l) + Hg(NH2)Cl (s) + NH4Cl (aq)
