Question
The epithelium may be the external surface of an organ, such as the skin or outer lining of the intestine, or internal surfaces of the bladder, prostate, breast, and so on. The other 10% of cancers arise mostly as leukemia’s (blood) and sarcomas (connective tissues, bone, etc.). The epithelium of the human colon turns over at least once per week throughout a person’ life time. As cells die at the surface, they are replaced by new cell divisions to keep your body functioning properly. By age 60, a person has been through at least 3,000 replacement cycles, which means that some cell lineages must pass through many generations. Those renewing lineages would be at high risk for accumulating mutations and progressing to cancer. (REWORD ALL THIS)
Explanation / Answer
The epithelium forms the outer lining of many organs such as skin, intestine, bladder, prostate, breast and so on. Normally, surface epithelium which forms the surface of the cell dies after a certain duration of time and replaced by new cell divisions which aid to maintain the proper body function. As the body undergoes the chances of mutation occurrence in the genome of the dividing cells increases which incorporates into the renewing cell lineages. The accumulated mutation may result in loss of the function of the suppressor genes and ultimately end up with the occurrence of cancer. 90% of the reported cancer are found to be associated with epithelium.
