Question
Ok, so I'm studying about genetics and this slide explains calculating variance within a populaition.
The colored numbers have been calculated from the numbers in their respective color's box.
I don't understand how the number was able to be made from those sets of numbers.
Can someone explain it for me?
Genetic and Phenotypic Variance Table 19-2 Simulated Data for Days to Pollen Shed for 10 Inbred Lines of Maize Grown in Two Experiments Inbred lines 68 70 72 74 Environment 2 Environment 3 70 70 72 72 76 68 74 14.67E 12.0+ 2.67 Broad-sense heritability, H2- Vg / VxExplanation / Answer
To calculate Ve follow these steps:
subtract total mean of three experiments from mean of individual experiments
68 - 70 = - 2
70 - 70 = 0
72 - 70 = 2
Now square the result, add and divide by number of experiments to get Ve
(2)2 + (0)2 + (2)2 / 3 = 2.67
Similarly do for Vg
= (64 - 70)2 + (66 - 70)2 + (68 - 70)2 + (68 - 70)2 + (70 - 70)2 + (70 - 70)2 + (72 - 70)2 + (72 - 70)2 + (74 - 76)2 + (76 - 70)2 / 10
= 120 / 10
= 12
