Question
18. Explain how each of the following statements might affect the layout of process equipment: a. A specific pump requires a large NPSH b. The flow of liquid from an overhead condenser to the reflux drum is gravity d ri- ven c. Pumps and control valves should be located for easy access and maintenance. d. Shell and-tube exchanges may require periodic cleaning and tube bundle replace ment e. Pipes located at ground level present a tripping hazard. f. The prevailing wind is nearly always from the westExplanation / Answer
A) Selecting a pump with excessive NPSH requirements can lead to large problems further down the road. While a pump may provide acceptable performance despite lower efficiencies, a pump that requires more NPSH than the system makes available will never operate as designed, and internal damage can be expected in relatively short order.
B). Without the reflux drum what we save is - some capital cost/ some reflux pumping power.
and what we lose?
What will be the elevation of the condenser if you do not intend to have a reflux drum?
You will have to place the condenser above the distillation column & the elevation of the condenser will be
= column elevation + head loss in FT/CV/lines etc.
C). Pumps and Valves should be located so that in case of leakage there should be no damage to other property due to flooding or pump failure
Also they should be located in locations easy for their repairs and maintenance.
D). S $ T heat exchangers requires periodic cleaning due to fouling on shell side and tube sides their resistance to heat transfer increases(or heat transfer decreases due to fouling).
E). Many fall injuries occur on level ground when people trip over unexpected objects( like pipes located at ground level )in their path. Help eliminate trip hazards by training employees to follow these do’s and don’ts.
F). This happens because Earth's rotation generates which is known as the Coriolis effect.
