Question

Name By citing specific data, show that you could (or could not) distinguish between the two compounds below using three (3) of the following spectroscopic techniques IR spectroscopy, H-NMR spectroscopy, BC-NMR spectroscopy or mass spectrometry. If you are aware of several significant distinguishing features, mention all of them. Give all references used to answer the question. A) 1-bromo-3-ethylbenzene B) 2-hexanone C) Ethyl butanoate D) 3-chlorophenol 1-bromo-2-ethylbenzene 3-hexanone 2-pentanone 4-chlorophenol

Explanation / Answer

A) By 1H NMR spectra one singlet will be appeared in case of 1 bromo 3 ethylbenzene but no singlet will be present in 1 bromo 2 ethylbenzene.
B) 13C can easily differ these two compunds. 2 hexanone three peak will be appeared, where as in 3 hexanone 5 peaks will be appeared.
C) By IR spectroscopy easily differentiate these two compounds. IR spectra of ethyl butanoate shows a peak < 1750 to 1780 cm-1 as ester group is present here whereas in 2 pentanone C=O shows a peak in between 180 to 1700 cm-1
D) These two compounds can easily distinguished by 1H NMR spectroscopy. In 3 chlorophenol compund the hydrogen present in between Cl & OH shows higher delta value and singlet peak will be arrosed. but in case of 4 chloro phenol no singlet peak will be arosed.
