Question
3.) Table sugar is really a disaccharide called sucrose. Sucrose is made from the condensation reaction of fructose and glucose. The reaction is shown below. 1 glucose 1fructose 1 water + 1 sucrose Solution A is 60% glucose and flows into a boiler at 325 gal/min. Solution B is 72% fructose and flows into the same boiler at 300 gal/min. The boiler is at 125 degrees Celsius. As a result the water will boil but the sucrose will not. 45 gal/min of water steam comes out of the boiler. What is the rate of production of water?Explanation / Answer
Solution :-
Volume of water produced per minute = 45 gal
45 gal * 3.78541 L /1 gal = 170.344 L
Temperature = 125 C +273 = 398 K
Atmospheric pressure = 1 atm
Lets calculate the moles of water steam produced using ideal gas law
PV= nRT
n= PV/ RT
= 1 atm * 170.344L / (0.08206 L atm per mol K * 398 K)
= 5.22 mol water
Therefore moles of water produced per minute are 5.22 mol
Rate = change in concentration / time
Rate of water produced = 5.22 mol / 1 min
Therefore rate of the water production is 5.22 mol/min
