Classify each of the following biochemical reactions: glucose 6-phospatefucos-phosphate ucol5 b. Ala-Trp-Val-Arg-Leu-Phe-Met-GlyH,OAla-Trp-Val-Arg+Leu-Phe-Met-Gly c. malate +NAD oxaloacetate + NADH d. CH -000 e. ATP + CoASH AMP + PPi CoO Coo 00C-CH 2. What is the difference between a cofactor and a coenzyme? What purpose(s) do they serve? 3. What is meant by a prosthetic group?Explanation / Answer
1. a Glycolysis
b. Protein hydrolysis
c. Krebs cycle/ citric acid cycle
d. Amino acid replacement.
e. Beta oxidation
f. Hydration
2. Cofactors are mostly metal ions ( although sometimes they may be organic or inorganic moieties) that help enzymes for functioning and catalysis of reactions. They support an enzyme in its function.
Coenzymes are mostly organic and inorganic molecules, that bind to an apoenzyme( inactive enzyme), to produce a functional holoenzyme ( activated enzyme). They basically activates an enzyme.
3. A protein is mostly composed of amino acids. But in a protein moiety, there are regions, that are not composed of amino acids. They are attached to the amino acid part to make it functional. They may be vitamins or organic or inorganic molecules. These non amino acid parts of a protein molecule are called prosthetic groups.
