Testing for Cations and Anions-Lab 6 B. Tests for Negative lons (Anions) Observations for unknown Procedure BI Chloride test cr B.2 Sulfate test SO4 B.3 Phosphate test PO4 B.4 Carbonate test co Identification of the negative ion in the unknown solution From your test results, what negative ion (anion) is present in your unknown? Explain your choice. Writing the Formula of Your Unknown Salt Unknown sample number C. C.l Cation Name Anion Name C.2 Formula of the unknown salt Name of the unknown saltExplanation / Answer
In this question we discuss only on what are the test observation and it’s result ,it not possible to give exact answer it depends on your lab experiment test given cation and anion . unknown salt only find with practical tests, here I explain part B test for negative ions, it will be helpful for your lab test.
B1.Chloride ion test
If your salt having Chloride ion (Cl)- add AgNO3 Soluton it will be give white color precipitate AgCl & this precipitate does not dissolve in nitric acid (HNO3)
B2. Sulfate Ion test
If your salt having sulafate ion, just add BaCl2 it will give white color precipitate because of BaSO4 ppt formation, this one also doesnot dissolve in Nitric Acid(HNO3 )
B3.Phosphate test
If your salt having Phosphate ion ,you just add ammoniyam molybdate solution (NH4)2MoO4
It will be give yellow color ppt then only we definitely say that is phosphate ion other wise it may come yellow color solution result would be wrong, that one not phosphate ion.
B.4 Carbonate test
If your salt having carbonate anion you may add few drops of HCl it will give gas, this gas comes to formation of CO2 gas ,that one observed by seeing bubbles in your test tube.
