Use the following potential energy diagram below to answer questions: 4Pts AB EA, forward 100 80 Ea. reverse PE 60 (k))AB C+D 20 Progress of the reactiorn a. is the overall reaction, as shown, exothermic or endothermic? what is the value of the activation energy for the forward reaction? Be sure to include the appropriate sign. b. what is the value of the activation energy for the reverse reaction? Be sure to include the appropriate sign. c. d. what is the value of the enthalpy change (AH) for the forward reaction? Be sure to include the appropriate sign. what is the value of the enthalpy change (AH) for the reverse reaction? Be sure to include the appropriate sign. e. f. is the reverse reaction exothermic or endothermic? g. which species (or substance) forms the activated complex? h. which species or set of species has the highest energy? i. which species or set of species has the weakest bonds? j which species or set of species has the strongest bonds?

Explanation / Answer

1) The energy of final product is lower than the reactant , so we can say energy is released overall. so the reaction is EXOTHERMIC.

2) The Ea for forward reaction is - 100-40= + 60 KJ As the energy of activatd complex is = 100 KJ Energy of reactant (A+B) =40 KJ

3) The Ea for reverse reaction is- 100-20= +80 KJ As the energy of A.C. = 100 KJ Energy of product (C+D) = 20 KJ

4) Enthalapy change for the forward reaction= energy of product- energy of reactant = 20-40 = -20 KJ

5) Enthalapy change for the reverse reaction= 40-20 = +20 KJ

6) For the reverse reaction, as the energy of product i.e. A+B is greater than the reactant C+D. So overall the energy is being taken for the reaction to proceed. Hence reaction is ENDOTHERMIC.

7) AB

8) AB has the highest energy i.e. 100 KJ

9) AB has the weakest bond and between (A+B) and (C+D) ... (A+B) has weaker bond.

9) C+D has the strongest bond.
