Question

1. A 1500 kg mix having 15% salt is fed in an evaporator. A total of 500 kg of concentrate remained. Determine the weight of water removed and the composition of the concentrate. 2. A 3000 kg mix having 15% salt is fed in an evaporator. A total of 1000 kg of concentrate remained. Determine the weight of water removed and the composition of the concentrate. 3. The requirement of Pancake House for its hotcake syrup is an 80% sugar solution. The supplier’s available stock contains 1 kg sugar /2 kg water. A triple-effect evaporator is then used for the process. The system is operated such that ½ of the water content of the solution entering an effect is evaporated. 1000 kg of the desired syrup are to be produced. You are required to calculate the following: a) Weight of Feed Solution, b) Weight of Evaporate from the second effect, c) Weight of the solution leaving the first effect, d) % sugar of the solution leaving the second effect, and e) Total weight of Evaporates.

Explanation / Answer

1) Initial mass of mixture = 1500 kg

Mass of salt present = 0.15 * 1500 kg = 225 kg

Mass of water present = 1500 kg -225 kg = 1275 kg

Now, the salt remains and only water evaporates.

So, finally we have 500 kg of concentrate.

So, 225 kg of salt + 275 kg of water.

Mass of water evaporated = 1275 kg - 275 kg = 1000 kg

Percentage of salt in concentrate = (225 /500) x 100 = 45%

2)

Initial mass of mixture = 13000 kg

Mass of salt present = 0.15 * 3000 kg = 450 kg

Mass of water present = 3000 kg -450 kg = 2550 kg

Now, the salt remains and only water evaporates.

So, finally we have 1000 kg of concentrate.

So, 450 kg of salt + 550 kg of water.

Mass of water evaporated = 2550 kg - 550 kg = 2000 kg

Percentage of salt in concentrate = (450 /1000) x 100 = 45%
