Question

1. Suppose that there are two components A and B, in a mixture. The chemical affinity of A for the stationary phase is less than that of B and the chemical affinity of A for the mobile phase is greater than that of B. If the mixture is subject to paper chromatography which substance will have traveled further at the completion of the experiment? Which substance will have the largest Rf value? Explain you answer

2. If a spot travels 4.7 cm during paper chromatography while the mobile phase travel 6.6 cm, what is the Rf value of the substance in the spot?

3. If the mobile phase had traveled 9.4 cm, how far would a spot containing the same solution would have traveled?

Explanation / Answer

Ans 1)

affinity mean more likely to bind...

A has less affinity to stationary mean travel fast than B

Same way A has the affinity towards mobile phase mean travel along with mobile phase fast than A

Both the ways the A is more likely to move fast, so A traveled further at the completion of the experiment.

Rf value = distance traveled by solute / Distance traveled by solvent front

A has traveled more distance over the B in same conditions.

So A has the largest Rf value

Qun 2)

Rf = distance traveled by solute / Distance traveled by the solvent front

= 4.7 cm / 6.6 cm =0.71

Qun 3)

It is assumption question, We know that the Rf value of A is 0.71

So, if solvent front travels 9.4cm, within such conditions how far A would A travel

Rf = dis. tarvelled by A / 9.4cm

dis.travelledd by A = Rf x 9.4 cm = 0.71 x 9.4cm = 6.69 cm
