Question

As a metallurgist you have been asked to determine if the jaw crusher is able to increase capacity from 1500 t/h to 2000 t/h. If the new rate is not possible determine the maximum throughput? You conduct a survey and size the feed and product exiting the crusher with the results shown in the figure below. A bond work index was conducted on the feed sample and it was determined to be 18 kWh/t. The jaw crusher has a 500 kW capacity. 120% 100% 80% % Passing 60% 40% -Feed 20% - Product 0% 0 25000 50000 75000 100000 125000 150000 175000 200000 225000 250000 275000 300000 Size (um) Power = W;Q10 k

Explanation / Answer

We see the product and feed sizes corresponding to the 80% passage respectively.

F80 = 2,00,000 m

P80 = 75,000 m

P = 500 kW

Substituting in the formula, to find Q,

500 = 18 x Q x 10 (1/75000 - 1/200000)

Q = 1962.517 tons/h --- Maximum throughput

New rate would not have been possible
