4. (15 points total) Everybody wants accurate answers with minimal effort. With that in mind indicate which activity coefficient model you would select for the following applications and briefly explain your selection. Select from the following options: 1) ideal solution, 2) symmetric model, 3) Margules equation, 4) Wilson equation. You may use each of these more than once or not at all. (a) Determining the vapor pressure of a toluene/benzene mixture at 60 °C. (b) Determining the vapor composition of an ethanol/water mixture at 75 °C, (c) Separation of acetone and methanol using multiple distillation columns operating at 100, 200, and 500 kPa.

Explanation / Answer

a,b)for these two better to go with ideal solution,we can find the vapor preassure using the raoults law.because the two mixtures given in a,b are azeotropic mixtures, these have same boiling point and we can find the vapor preassure using raoults law if the other parameters such as total pressure, liquid, vapor mole fractions are known.

c)for this question morgule equations are better for seperation because three preassures are given it helps in getting more number of parameters in morgules equations.
