Question

A solution containing a certain drug is analyzed by molecular fluorescence using the standard additions method. A three mL sample of the solution is pipetted into a cuvette and the (blank-corrected) fluorescence intensity, F (linearly related to concentration in this range),is found to be 3.46. Then a 100.0 L aliquot of a standard 15.84ppm solution of the drug is added to the cuvette, and after mixing the new F is 6.87. A second 100.0 L aliquot is added, giving an F of 9.98. Use Excel to prepare a standard additions plot .Calculate the concentration of the drug in the solution.

Explanation / Answer

The important parameter to get is constant that is relating F and concentration.

Initially 3 ml solution has F =3.46

1ml solution with concentration 15.84 ppm gives F=6.87

Let k be constant,then F=kC

k= 6.87/15.84 = 0.4337

For first solution,then C= 3.46/0.4337= 7.98 ppm
