Question
All for Carbon Dioxide:
a. Type of reaction—Describe the general class of reaction (combustion, acid/base, redox, etc.).
b. Heat of reaction—Provide the amount of heat that must be added or removed from this reaction at the relevant temperature and
whether this reaction is exothermic or endothermic.
c. All products, reactants, and catalysts – Include a balanced equation with all states of participants.
d. Special considerations—Document the safe operating range of this reaction, safety considerations, and side reactions that may
produce unwanted products.
c. Summary of other possible reactions – Provide either another reaction to produce the compound or an alternate use and its
reaction.
Explanation / Answer
a) It is combustion type of reaction since carbon reacts with oxygen to give product.
b) The heat of the reaction is -393.5 kJ/mol at 25oC , which is a negative value indicating
that the reaction is exothermic and hence heat evolved must be removed.
c) C (s) + 1/2 O2 (g) ------> CO (g)
CO (g) + 1/2 O2 (g) -------> CO2 (g)
-----------------------------------------------------
C (s) + O2 (g) ---------> CO2 (g)
----------------------------------------------------
d) The concentration of CO2 should not exceed 350 ppm and CO should be safely handled
otherwise it may cause poisoning.
Side reactions could be,
CO2 + 3/2 O2 -----> CO + 2 O2 (CO is unwanted product)
e) Other possible reactions :
CH4 (g) + 2O2 (g) ------> CO2 (g) + 2H2O
H2O + CO (g) -----> H2 (g) + CO2 (g)
