Give the specific colors that are transmitted by permanganate ion, and explain correspond to the color your eyes sce for permanganate ion? how they If you wanted to use light (such as from a powerful laser) to cause chemical reactions of permanganate ion, what wavelength should be used? Why? . In an earlier Chemistry 161 lab, you examined the spectrum of green food dye, which had a transmittance minimum at a Does permanganate have a shorte or longer wavelength at its minimum transmittance? 3. 30 nm. Is the difference betwcen permanganate's cnergy level mory or less than in the green food dye? -sharp" and "Broad" are terms that refer to the approximate width in nm of an absorption or emission pcak. Comparing your spectrum for permanganate ion in solution to the bright line spectra of Ilydrogen or Helium (which you observed in the spectroscope), is the peak in the solution absorption spectrum sharper or broader than the individual bright lines in the emission 4. spectrum of the gas phase atoms? Does this correspond to greater or fewer possibilities for the separation of the energy levels of permanganate in solution compared to Hydrogen and IIclium in the gas phase?

Explanation / Answer

1) The colour of permanganate ions is purple, it means that purple colour (alongwith other) of light is transmitted and red colour must be absorbed. It is because the colouration of any chemical depends upon the colour absorbed and the complementary colour is transmitted.
Thus red colour is absorbed and rest are transmitted.

2) The chemical reaction of permanganate ions will require red colour laser to initiate reaction because red colour is absorbed and it will cause the reaction to take place.
3) the purple colour has shorter wavelength as compared to green color. COnsider VIBGYOR for comparison. From right to left in VIBGYOR, wavelength of transmission increases.
4) The comparison ofline spectra with that of spectra obtained from permanganate ions is very different. It is because the spectra obtained from permanganate ions usually contains large number of peaks merged due to various transitions due to ligand to metal charge transfer transitions. Borad spectrum is one having larger width and sharp are those having small width.
Yes due to this reason the proability of separation of energy levels in permanganate ions spectra is very less. In H/He line spectra, every transition owes to a specific emission and thus energy levels can be separated.
