Question
For the following situations, name the type of reproductive isolation and whether it is a preor
postzygotic barrier:
a. Two species of chinchilla are put in the same cage in the pet store and end up mating
and producing the cutest offspring. When the storeowner tries to cross the hybrids she
discovers they are sterile.
b. The purple nosed purple people eater breeds in meadows; the pink nosed purple
people eater breeds in the forest.
c. Many species of coral broadcast spawn on the same lunar cycle but their sperm fail to
fuse with the eggs of different species.
d. A male Bigfoot residing in the arctic is having trouble finding a mate so he hops on a
plane to the Antarctic to find a female Bigfoot. They mate but their cubs (?) are very
weak and frail and do not survive past the first month.
e. A pygmy kangaroo attempts to mate with a red kangaroo but because of the vast size
difference, the attempt fails.
f. An amateur orchid farmer crosses the vanilla orchid with the cinnamon orchid and
produces a beautiful smelling hybrid that she is able to successfully cross however;
the hybrid’s offspring are sterile.
g. Emperor angelfish mate as the sun rises; bandit angelfish mate as the sun sets.
h. The Illinios greater prairie chicken booms and stomps his feet to attract a mate while
the lesser prairie chicken coos and shakes his feathers while hopping in circles.
Explanation / Answer
Reproductive barriers are those that prevent two different species from interbreeding and to have an offspring. The reproductive barriers are of two types, prezygotic and postzygotic. Mechanical isolation is a type of prezygotic reproductive barrier, in which mating is not possible In case of post zygotic barriers, though mating occurs, the chances of offspring to born alive are very less.
If the sex organs of two species animals or plants are not compatible to have an offspring, we call it as mechanical isolation. Eg: Frogs and birds.
a. Two species of chinchilla are put in the same cage in the pet store and end up mating and producing the cutest offspring. When the storeowner tries to cross the hybrids she discovers they are sterile. ----------> POST ZYGOTIC BARRIER
b. The purple nosed purple people eater breeds in meadows; the pink nosed purple people eater breeds in the forest. --------------> PREZYGOTIC BARRIER (MECHANICAL ISOLATION).
