Explanation / Answer

2K + Cl2 ---> 2KCl

Molar mass of potassium = 39 g/mol

Molar mass of chlorine = 71 g/mol

From the reaction,every 1 mole of Chlorine requires 2 moles of Potassium i.e. 71 gm of Chlorine requires (2 x 39) = 78 gm of Potassium. Thus,1 gm Chlorine requires = 78/71 = 1.0985 gm of Potassium.

So,for 7 gm Chlorine quantity of Potassium required = 7 x 1.0985 = 7.6895 gm of Potassium. But potassium available is only 5 gm. Thus,potassium is limiting reactant.

1.0985 gm of Potassium reacts with 1 gm of Chlorine. So,5 gm of potassium will react with = 5/1.0985= 4.54 gm.

Excess Chlorine = 7-4.54= 2.46 gm.
