Principles of Project Management Class

MAn idea for a reflection paper is based on the stereotypical interview question given to pageant contestants about what they think the world needs or what they would like to accomplish during their time as Miss America or name-a-pageant. You might hear them answer ‘world peace’ or something along that line. I don’t expect anyone to solve the problem of world peace in their project but by using the question as a basis, what problem do you want to address and how might you go about solving it as a project manager? The project can be fun, fanciful, silly, or even a real issue – big or small.

Requirements and Givens:

Requirements – Select a problem of any size or scope. You do not need to have expertise in the field only the idea that you feel it is a problem and that you have some thoughts on how you might solve the problem. The problem can be simple like getting your kids to clean their room or as complex as dealing with climate change. Try to make it a passion or interest of your own and you must be able to frame the solution in terms of a project that needs to be managed.

You do not need to be specific in your answers but address the various issues that a project manager involved with solving the problem you have selected would need to solve. Your answer should include each of the topics that we have talked about in our chapters. Budgeting, scheduling, resource allocation, etc.

Givens – As I mentioned you do not need to be an expert or even know things work in the real world. You can assume that the only obstacles that you will have to deal with are ones generated by your decisions. No corporate or lobbying interests are going to stop your project from moving forward.

Example:

The children’s rooms need to be cleaned.

Review the problem and look for answers to why it’s happening and what you could do to solve it.

The children are messing up their room.

I could clean it. I could hire a service. They could clean it.

I don’t have time. I don’t have the money. They need to learn a valuable skill and to learn responsibility.

I will determine a budget for paying allowances or giving rewards for accomplishing the task.

I will schedule to time to teach them how to clean and how to use the tools necessary to clean. I will make available to necessary equipment for them to accomplish the task. I will train them on that equipment. I will help them to learn the procedures that should be followed maybe even including them in constructing those procedures.

I will walk them through the process and make sure they know what they are doing.

I will monitor their final product to see if it meets the standards that were set.

Or you could create world peace.

Again, this is not necessarily a serious project. The point of the reflection is that your answer reflects the particular issues that you as the project manager would be dealing with in managing the project.

Explanation / Answer

The project selected is: Teaching ‘The Sustainable Way of Living’ in the neighbourhood.

The problem is that people need to learn how to ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’ things because we have limited resources and living in a sustainable way also decreases the overall cost of living. They keep exploiting nature like throwing garbage wherever they like, polluting the neighbourhood lake by throwing wet waste there, throwing away plastic bottles and cans with regular waste, cutting of trees to make desired parking spaces, etc.

Reviewing of the problem: All the above problems are happening because people do not have adequate knowledge of a sustainable living.
