1. The problem statement,all variables and given/known data

The specific gravity of nitrobenzene is 1.20.
a) Calculate the mass in kg of 250 litres of nitrobenzene.
b) Calculate the volumetric flow in mL/min corresponding to a massflow of 30 lbm/h of nitrobenzene.
c) Calculate the density of a mixture composed of 20 litres ofnitrobenzene and 3 ft^3 of benzene (SG = 0.879), by supposing thatthe volume of the mixture is the sum of the volume of the twosubstances.

2. Relevant equations

SG=p/pref
v=m/p

3. The attempt at a solution
a) I got 1.2*250=300 kg
b) I got v= 183.33 ml/min
C) I do not know how to solve it
I find 3ft^3= 84.950
and I do not how to solve it?Please help me 1. The problem statement,all variables and given/known data

Explanation / Answer

The specific gravity of nitrobenzene is 1.20.
a) Calculate the mass in kg of 250 litres of nitrobenzene.
We know that density , d = mass m / Volume V So , m = d * v            =1.2 g / mL * 250 L            =1.2 g / mL * 250 * 1000 mL            =300000 g            =300 Kg
b) Calculate the volumetric flow in mL/min corresponding to a massflow of 30 lbm/h of nitrobenzene. mass flow of 30 lbm/h of nitrobenzene 1n 1 hour the mass flow is 30 lb                                        = 30 * 453.6g              Since 1 lb = 453.6 g In 60 min the mass flow is 30* 453.6 g In 1 min the flow will be ( 30 * 453.6 ) / 60                                    = 226.8 g                                    = 226.8 g / 1.2 g /mL                                 ( since Volume = mass / density )                                    = 189 mL
c) Calculate the density of a mixture composed of 20 litres ofnitrobenzene and 3 ft^3 of benzene (SG = 0.879), by supposing thatthe volume of the mixture is the sum of the volume of the twosubstances. mass of 20 L nitrobenzene , m' = density * Volume                                               = 1.2 g / mL * 20 * 10^3 mL                                               = 24 * 10^3 g                                               = 24 Kg 1 ft^3 = 28.32 L 3 ft^3 = 3 * 28.32 L = 84.96 L So , mass of 84.96L benzene , m'' = density * Volume                                                     = 0.879 g / mL * 84.96 * 10^3 mL                                                     = 74.679 * 10^3g                                                     =74.679Kg Total Volume V = 20 + 84.96 L = 104.96 L Total mass , m = m' + m" = 98.679 Kg Density of the mixture , D = m / V                                        = 0.9401 Kg / L

                                                    = 0.879 g / mL * 84.96 * 10^3 mL                                                     = 74.679 * 10^3g                                                     =74.679Kg Total Volume V = 20 + 84.96 L = 104.96 L Total mass , m = m' + m" = 98.679 Kg Density of the mixture , D = m / V                                        = 0.9401 Kg / L
