If a ferric chloride solution was added to a pure aspirin, would you expect a red-violet color to appear? Explain you answer including structural formula.
Explanation / Answer
An ordinary aspirin tablet contains 5 grains of aspirin ; the rest being binder and filler .One grain equals 0.0648g . so 5 grains contains = 5*0.0648 g = 0.324 g now we know that 1 tablet of aspirin contains 5 grains of aspirin =0.324 g so 0.324 g = 1 tablet 10 gm = (1/0.324)*10 = 30.86tablets ~= 30 tablets 30 aspirin tablet would constitute such a fatal dose. If a ferric chloride solution was added to a pure aspirin, iwould expect a red-violet color to appear.
