Question

a) Would it be possible to separate hexane(boiling point: 68.95 oC) from toluene (bp:110.6oC) by simple distillation? Explain youranswer.

For this question, I tried to look up the best temperaturedifference for simple distillation, but everywhere gave me adifferent number, so I'm kind of lost...

b) Could benzene (bp:80.1oC) be separated by fractional distillation from pentane(bp 30.07)? Explain your answer.

This one I'm leaning towards yes. I thinkpretty much anything can be separated by fractional distillation? And I'm guessing that solutions that don't obey Raoult's Law woulddefinitely need to use fractional, but how can I tell withoutactually performing the experiment?

Please reply! I'll give Lifesaver for a clear, detailed answer! Thanks :)

Explanation / Answer

      a) The seperation of hexane (boilingpoint 68.95 oC ) from toulene (bp.110.6oC) is possible through simple distillation    process. since these two solvents are have largervariation in their boiling points hence we can easily seperatedthem by using distillation method .Here the the solvent which ishaving lower boiling point will come out first from the columnand second one is come out later. b) in fractional distillation process we would seperateof any solvent. Because here we applied sufficeint vapour pressureto the mixture of solvents and then it is passed throughthe column where the solvent is vapourised first and get back bycondensed the process is going on repetedly .So the finally thesolvent which is very low poiling point and high vapour pressure iscome out earlier by the column. Here the sample is collected asfractionally from the column . There fore by using this method we can seperate benzene from pentaneeasily .
