Question

The question is as follows "Which one of the following willhave the highest electrical conductivity when dissolved in 1L ofwater? a) .010 Mol KCL b) .010 Mol CaI2 c) .010 Mol MgSO4 d) .010 Mol Al(NO3)3 e) .010 Mol Na2SO4" Now, I know strong electrolytes are strong acids, strongbases, and salts. So KCl and Na2SO4 arestrong electrolytes. Also, I know that molecular compounds are nonelectrolytes, soCaI2 is a nonelectrolyte, and therefore out of therunning. The other two I'm not really sure of, other than knowing theyare metals and therefore probably will conduct electricity? My question is: how do I know which will conduct the highestamount of electricity? Explanation / Answer

The solution with the highest conductivity will consist of a strongelectrolyte that also dissociates to the highest number of ions. All of the molar concentrations are the same, so the onlydifference is the number of ions each molecule will dissociateinto. Solubility rules allow us to predict that all the given compoundsare soluble. (CaI2 is not a molecularcompound, it consists of a metal and non-metal, therefore it is anionic compound). Al(NO3)3 dissociates into four ions - oneAl3+ and 3 NO3- ions, thereforewill give the solution with the highestconductivity.
