Due to the specific heat capacity of water it will get heated much slower than the land mass. Thus, the warm air will rise and the cooler air above the water will come to take its place. This way the temperature variations are minimized. Thus the explanation for the differences average monthly temperatures exist for these two locations: Land takes longer to heat up than water and cools quickly. The ocean near San Francisco limits its temperature variations. Answer- Continentatility is meterological phenomenon of the difference between the marine and land climate it commonly observed in the temperature difference between land and sea or other water bodies. Land experience more fluctuation in the surface temperature than the water bodies because land have lower heat capicity and also characterized by low evaporation rate. and on other side sea or ocean have high evaporation rate and high heat capicity and low fluctuation in the temperature. the climate near the shore is also affected by the strength of prevailing winds near the shore and the proximity near the water bodies and also due to high specific rate they get slower heated than land. On increasing distance from the shore the large fluctuation in the surface temperature because absence of prevailing winds currents.
So in the above graph san francisco which occurs near the wester boundry of USA experience low temperature difference represented by the blue graph and Urbana situated in interior experience high surface temperature. and high fluctuation in the temperature represented by red graph.
