Question

A student did experiements to establish the relativity ofmetallic Zn, Cu, and Pb. The following observations were made: a)both Zn and Pb metals reacted with 6M HCl, but Cu metal did not; b)there was no reaction between lead(II) sulfate solution (PbSO4) andCu metal, but there was a reaction between PbSO4 solution and Znmetal. 1) write a chemical equation based on each of the observationsin (a) above. 2) write chemical equations describing the observations in(b) 3) list the three metals and hydrogen in order of relativereactivity A student did experiements to establish the relativity ofmetallic Zn, Cu, and Pb. Explanation / Answer

1- Zn + 2 HCl -> ZnCl2 + H2
      Pb + 2 HCl -> PbCl2 + H2 2- PbSO4 + Zn -> ZnSO4 + Pb 3- The copper didn't react with anything so it is laston the list. the Hydrogen iss next because HCl react withboth Pb and Zn. The Pb is next because PbSO4 reacted withZn. Zn is first because it reacted(replaced) all theother ions. order from highest to lowest Zn, Pb, H, Cu.
