Question

You need to synthesize 4-octyne from ethyne and any bromoalkane youneed. List the reagents you need in the order you would need to usethem to make 4-octyne. Use the letter from the reagent table forinorganic reagents and write the IUPAC substitutive name for thebromoalkane.
Reagent Table
Assume you have access to 2 equivalents if you needit.
If you do not need all of the steps, type NAin the blank of the unused steps.

(Click hyperlink to take you to the reagent table.)
Start with the first reagent you would add to ethyne(aka acetylene).
Step 1 1
Step 2 2
Step 3 3
Step 44

I know that all steps are needed. I'm assuming you have toopen up the triple bond and do some adding to it, but I don't knowwhere to start. Any help would be great!

Explanation / Answer

"If you react ethyne with sodium amide inammonia, it will deprotonate the molecule. Then you react it with1-bromopropane to yield 1-pentyne. Deprotonate 1-pentyne withNaNH2/NH3 and react it with 1-bromo propane to yield 4-octyne."(http://sg.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20071105102810AAt4QLv)

So step 1 is NaNH2,NH3 (T). I'm not really sure what the othersare, but the above info might be helpful. Let me know if you getit! thanks!
