Question

I am taking Organic Chemistry I: the topic of my lab question is about Melting Point Determination:  The lab experiment was about finding the melting point determination of an unknown compound and I could not answer the last question of my post-lab questions: is about: An unidentified compound is observed to melt sharply at 111 degree Celsius with the vigorous evolution of a gas. The sample then solidifies and does not melt until the temperature reaches 155 degree Celsius, at which time it again melts sharply. Briefly explain these observation. CHEM 2423 MELTING POINT DETERMINATION/POST LABORATORY QUESTION-EXP 1/ Dr. Pahlavan

Explanation / Answer

The unidentified compoundmay be an impure compound . The melting point of an impure compoundis less than that of pure compound because of the colligativeeffects . At 111oC the impure compound meltsand the impurities may left the compound in the form of gas . Thenthe pure compound in liquid form gets soldified . Now the puresolid melts at its original melting point which is higher than theimpure compound i.e 155oC
