Question

1. Use the Pronciples of bonding and molecular structure toexplain the following: a. The boiling point of argon is -186 degrees whereasthe boiling point of neon is -246. b. More energy is required to break up CaO crystal intoions than to break up KF crystal into ions. c. Molton KF conducts electricity, but solid KF doesnot. We do not understand what the bonds have to do with any partsof this question. We thought were related to the electronsand how close they were to the nucleus, but we aren't sure. Please help! 1. Explanation / Answer

1a) The dispersion force increase down the group of the noble gas.Neon situated above argon, thus neon has lower dispersion forcesbetween atom. As dispersion forces increases, more energy isrequired to break the force between atom, this results in anincrease of boiling point. 1b)Both CaO and KF involves ionic bond. Ca has a charge of +2 whileK has a charge of +1. As the number of charge increases, moreenergy is required to break the interaction into ions. 1c) In solid state, KF do not have mobile electrons to conductelectricity as the atom are tightly packed. In molten state, thereis mobile electron, thus molten KF can conduct electricity. Hope this helps!
