GERD or Gastroesphageal reflux disease, is when the contents of the stomach make its way back up to the esophagus. The biggest problems with GERD are heartburn and acid regurgitation. Risk factors for GERD include excess alcohol, obesity, smoking, and regular and decaf coffee. To help with GERD, omitting foods that are irritating mechanically or chemically. Sitting up after eating for after a meal for a few hours will help, as well as a low fat meals and avoiding large ones.
Explanation / Answer
Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, is a disorder found in digestive tract which affects the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), which forms the the ring of muscle between the esophagus and stomach. In most of the cases, GERD can be cured through food and living habits changes; however, some people may require medication or surgery. in normal course of digestion, the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) opens allowing food to reach stomach through oesophagus and shuts to prevent food and acidic stomach juices from flowing back into the esophagus. Gastroesophageal reflux occurs when the LES is weak or relaxes inappropriately, allowing the stomach's contents to flow up into the esophagus.
Reducing intake of chemical irritants or allergens, reducing the size of portions of meal may also help control symptoms. Eating at least 2 to 3 hours before sleeping may decrease the severity of reflux by allowing the acid in the stomach to decrease and the stomach to empty partially
